Volunteer Dementia Befriender

Our small team of 24 volunteers can provide a dementia befriending service for you and the person you care for with dementia.

Our small team of 24 volunteers can provide a dementia befriending service for you and the person you care for with dementia. This can help to reduce isolation and provide you with a regular short break

What is this service?

If you are registered with Carers in Bedfordshire and live with someone who has dementia, we may have a trained volunteer who can visit regularly. This service is free of charge.

Visits will usually be weekly for two hours on a Monday – Friday between 9.00am 5.00pm.  The same volunteer will visit each week and most volunteer befrienders only visit one family - really building up rapport and trust with each other.

You and the person you care for will agree together with the service coordinator and the volunteer a range of relevant and appropriate activities can be done at each visit.

The day, time and duration of the visit will be agreed by you and the volunteer.

How can a visit help?

  • For you to take a short break within the house, to read, relax, do some gardening etc
  • For the volunteer to spend time with the person with dementia and do fun activities such as playing board games, listening to music, light housework as a meaningful activity, reading aloud
  • For you to spend time together with the volunteer and your loved one, to reduce loneliness
  • For you to go out to do something for yourself, if appropriate
  • The visit may also include short trips out with the volunteer such as visits to garden centres, afternoon tea or shopping

How can I access this service?

By contacting Carers in Bedfordshire on 0300 111 1919, to register interest. Alternatively if you are in regular contact with a support worker, the service may be suggested. Please be aware that we are very limited to the availability and location of volunteers.

What is not provided?

  • Any aspect of personal care
  • Emergency respite
  • Manual handling and lifting – including wheelchair use
  • Any help with medication
